Old Hickory
The 7th President of the United States, Andrew Jackson, was very passionate about several areas of his life. He loved his country and its military, and his devotion to his men in the War of 1812 earned him the title “Old Hickory”. He was also devoted to his wife, Rachel, and he would defend her in a heartbeat with his favorite habit – dueling.
His famous duel against Charles Dickinson was the perfect example of his vigor. Dickinson was publicly making rude remarks about Jackson and his marriage, so Jackson challenged him to a duel.
Jackson knew the duel would be more of a battle of wits because Dickinson was more skilled of a marksman. He dressed in baggy clothes to disguise the location of his heart and he let Dickinson take the first shot. Jackson resolved that if he could withstand the shot, he could take a moment for composure and shoot with confidence and accuracy.
The day’s events unfolded just as Jackson planned. Dickinson took the first shot and although the bullet settled two inches from Jackson’s heart, Jackson remained standing and fatally shot Dickinson. Doctors were amazed Jackson was able to recover from such an injury, but they never able to remove the bullet from Jackson's chest.
Few men were as sturdy as “Old Hickory”. The nickname was suitable because Hickory is the strongest wood, harder than even the mighty Oak.
